The Travel Bug

Transportation 2000 International Conference
Summary

The Transportation 2000 Conference theme “The Travel Bug” presented the challenge of predicting the future. "Will our transport systems and infrastructure meet the challenge to be environmentally sensitive, people-friendly, freight-efficient, modally seamless, demand-responsive, ecologically sustainable, and aesthetically considerate? What are the threats and opportunities for the survival of modern travel freedom? What is, or what will be, the “Bug” in the system"?

Will it be in:

  • Infrastructure – ageing roads under stress from increasing traffic volumes and load mass,
  • Public Transport – resistant commuters clutching their private-car freedom like a lifeline,
  • Technology – Intelligent Transport Systems promising more capacity for the dollar, but will they deliver the goods?, or
  • Politics – will money diverted from providing bigger better roads ultimately buy votes?

And how will the “Bug” be eradicated?

Local and international speakers representing researchers, road authorities, road safety bureaus, regulators, operators, politicians, planners, designers, engineers, enforcers, scientists, and more will challenge and enlighten you regarding the Travel Bug.

The objectives of the Conference were to provide:

  • a diverse range of local and international considerations of the Conference theme,
  • an opportunity to share knowledge and experience, in the field of traffic planning, between a broad range of professionals and practitioners,
  • a focus on the common links between the Conference Partner organisations.
